Organizing Your Family

My church started Vacation Bible School (VBS) tonight (think of it as an extended Sunday School time every evening for five evenings for kids up to sixth grade). I’ve been thinking about the incredible amount of organization that goes into pulling off a successful VBS.

All the volunteers, class materials, food, and other resources have to be coordinated to achieve the desired result:

…kids come together to play, draw, sing, and make crafts, so they can learn about how much Jesus loves them.

Each set of teachers organizes their class in different ways, but the outcomes are very similar… they are pouring into these children’s lives because they believe it will have a great positive impact on those children’s futures.

So, what the heck does VBS have to do with organizing? Well, whether you are single, married, divorced, have kids, have no kids, have an empty nest, or are a family of one, etc., each of us organizes our families in different ways. But, our desire is to have a great positive impact on each family member’s future (including ours).

Now, there’s some chaos at VBS. 🙂 And, I’m guessing there’s some chaos in your environment, too. A VBS class makes some big messes. Our families make some messes, too. At VBS, you can have a lot of fun. I so hope you’re having fun in your family, too.

I think you get the picture. Life is for the living. Sometimes it is chaotic, messy, and fun all at the same time. We have a responsibility to our family members to love them, care for them, teach them, and then later to release them to make their own way in the world.  Getting organized and staying organized are a means to an end.

Organization is supposed to free you not confine you. Decluttering shouldn’t feel like someone’s locked you in a room until you finish your homework.  And, purging isn’t a set of stuffy old rules that make you feel like you’re being pushed into doing something you don’t want to do.

The truth: you get and stay organized, so that you have the freedom and peace of mind to continue to pour into your family member’s lives, because you believe it will have a great positive impact on their futures (and yours). Blessings, Tina.
